Walmart Has Tossed Us A Game Changer!

Holy cow, this really shakes things up in the couponing world.

Walmart has rolled out an App called Savings Catcher.

It is available on the Web, via Mobile Website and through the Walmart App.

Here’s how it works:
  1. Submit your receipt to Savings Catcher in any one of three ways:
    • Enter the receipt number (the TC number) into Savings Catcher at Walmart.com/savingscatcher. You’ll find this number located near the bottom of your printed Walmart store receipt.
    • Or, scan the code at the bottom of your printed store receipt, using the scanner in the Savings Catcher section of the Walmart app.
    • Or, register your phone number using the Walmart app or debit card reader located at in-store checkout. Then each time you check out at a Walmart store, enter your phone number and we’ll submit your receipt to Savings Catcher for you.
  2. Savings Catcher compares the prices of the eligible items you bought at Walmart to the advertised prices found in the print and online versions of the weekly ads of top retailers in your area. The ads must be valid at the time you made your Walmart purchase.
  3. If Savings Catcher finds an advertised price that is lower than what you paid for the same exact item at Walmart, you’ll get back the difference on a Walmart Rewards eGift Card.

Savings Catcher does not compare the following types of offers:
  • Items that require a separate purchase to get the advertised price (example: “Buy oatmeal to get cereal for $1.”)
  • Items with no actual price that require a purchase to get a free product (example: “Buy both oatmeal & cereal to get milk for free.”)
  • Items that require a purchase to get a gift card (example: “Buy a 12 pack of paper towels to get a $5 gift card.”)
  • Buy one get one free (BOGO) deals where no item price is listed (example: Peter Pan Peanut Butter, buy one, get one free. Save up to $2.50.”)
  • Going out of business or closeout prices.
  • Percentage off (example: “All mascara, 40% off.)

However, what makes this a big deal is the fact it will compare the price Pre-Coupon!

So, say you go to Walmart today to buy this deal we mentioned yesterday:

Butterball Turkey Bacon, 6oz on sale for $0.99 (At Walgreens, will need to bring Ad to Price Match)

Use $1.00/1 - Butterball Product
Or use $1.00/1 - Butterball Product

Net Price: $0.01 Moneymaker

Only, instead of bringing the ad with you, it would work like this:
  •  Buy Butterball Turkey Bacon, 6oz for Walmart's price minus $1.00 for the coupon.
  • Submit your receipt to Savings Catcher
  • Get a Walmart Rewards eGift Card for the difference between the pre-coupon price and the Walgreens $0.99 price, even though you didn't pay that much!
  • Profit!
You get the price match without having to bring the Ad or bugging the cashier to change the price.  I know some people don't like to hassle the cashiers for the price match, so here you get the benefits of the price match without the hassle of price match.  That also means any price matches you might miss, you get those without having to find them.  And you can get overage, without having to buy enough stuff in the same trip to cover the overage!

There is a limit of 7 receipts per week (Which shouldn't be a problem for most folks.) and $599.99 in Savings Dollars per year, so you may want to still bring the ad in and leave this for the items you miss if you think you may hit that limit.

Rewards and gift card offers and the other exclusions will keep Walmart from being a one stop shop for all the deals, but still, this can save you a lot of money with minimal hassle.  I'm excited!  What do you think?

    1. Agreed. I was already pondering a big Walmart run tonight. Now I doubly want to do so, I want to submit my first receipt. ;)

    2. Actually, I've been thinking more about this and if this catches on, I see further reaching implications downstream. I think I will give that it's own post though.
